1. Burnt Clay Bricks
Burnt clay bricks are the oldest bricks in building and are commonly used. This being superior in quality they are used in constructing important structures like walls, foundations, columns, etc. These are made by squeezing the wet clay into molds, then drying them in kilns and firing them. Burnt bricks are classified into four different groups, these being:
- First-class bricks – premium bricks deliver the highest quality and strength. Such bricks have regular form, smooth textures, and sharp edges, and are more sturdy and stronger than ever.
- Second-class brick -Those bricks are of medium quality. These bricks are irregular in shape, and the surface is not soft but rough. This brick class is used in those cases where the brickwork is coated with a plaster coat.
- Third-Class Bricks – As the name suggests, these bricks are of poor quality and are normally used for temporarily constructed structures. Not recommended for a rainy climate. Each type of brick is rough on the surface and some have unequal edges.
- Fourth-Class Bricks – These are over-burnt, shaped irregularly, and color black. This type of brick is used in foundations, paths, floors, and as an aggregate for concrete.
2. Unburnt Bricks
Often known as sun-dried bricks. This type of brick was not burnt in kilns but was dried from hardening in the sun. It is an example of brick making from an ancient period. The sun-dried bricks are less durable, have less resistance to water, and less resistance to fire. They are often found in rural areas or temporary constructions. The method of making these bricks involves three basic steps, i.e. preparation of clay, molding, and finally sun drying.
3. Fly Ash Bricks
These bricks are made up of clay and fly ash. A by-product of burning coal is called Fly ash. Fly ash bricks are fired at around 1,000 degrees centigrade. This is defined as ‘self-cementing’ due to the high concentration of calcium oxide in fly ash. It for the most part extends when dampness comes into contact. It is less porous than bricks made out of clay. It provides a smooth surface and it does not require plaster.
4. Fire Bricks

6. Sand Lime Bricks

9. Extruded Brick

10. Molded Brick
